How to Deworm Dams and Puppies

Dewormer 101
- We use two different deworming medications: Pyrantel and Panacur.
- Panacur is heavy duty and should never be used on a puppy that is under 6 weeks of age or nursing dams
- Pyrantel is safe to use on puppies under 6 weeks of age and nursing dams.
Pyrantel Protocol
Pregnant Moms
- Pregnant moms should be given pyrantel upon intake, and every two weeks thereafter until her puppies are weaned
- Pyrantel is administered for one day
- The dosage is based on weight (see dosage chart)
Puppies
- Puppies should be given Pyrantel when they are two weeks, four weeks, and six weeks of age
- If puppies are suspected of having a severe worm issue, see Panacur instructions
- Pyrantel is administered for one day
- Weigh puppies using a food scale or a household scale to determine dosage (see dosage chart)
Nursing Moms
- Nursing moms should be given pyrantel upon intake, and every two weeks thereafter until her puppies are weaned

Panacur Protocol
Pregnant Moms
Do NOT give Panacur to pregnant dogs
Puppies
- Puppies shall receive their first dose of Panacur at 8 weeks of age, UNLESS they have a severe worm issue
- Puppies with a severe worms may be given Panacur at 6 weeks of age
- Panacur is administered for five days in a row
- The dosage is based on weight (see dosage chart)
Nursing Moms
- Nursing moms should not receive their first dose of Panacur until their puppies have reached 5 weeks of age
